... painted by Diego Rivera and commissioned by Nelson Rockefeller embodying the struggle between capitalism and communism. Diego Rivera started painting it 1933 for the Rockefeller Center in New York City but it was removed after critics in the press about a portrait of Vladimir Lenin that it contained. As a result of the negative publicity, a further painting of a mural for an exhibition at the Chicago World's Fair was canceled. Rivera issued a statement that with the money left over from the mural at Rockefeller Center - he was paid in full though the mural was supposedly destroyed - he would repaint the same mural over and over wherever he was asked until the money ran out. |
